JellyFish Lighting vs Trimlight: What Cleveland Homeowners Really Need to Know

If you've been researching permanent outdoor lighting in the Cleveland area, you've probably come across two names: JellyFish Lighting and Trimlight. Both promise beautiful, app-controlled permanent lighting for your home. But there are some significant differences that could affect your decision — and your wallet — for years to come.

At CoolBreeze Technologies in Lorain, Ohio, we install JellyFish Lighting exclusively. Here's our honest breakdown of how the two systems compare.

The Technology: Light Quality and Design

Both JellyFish and Trimlight use individually addressable LED bulbs — meaning each light on your home can display its own color independently. That's a shared strength across professional permanent lighting systems and worth knowing when you hear marketing claims suggesting otherwise.

Where JellyFish genuinely stands apart is in the quality of that light output.

JellyFish's Mark 4 eave light features a frosted lens that diffuses light smoothly along your roofline, creating a clean, seamless glow. Trimlight uses an open-faced bulb design that protrudes from the channel, producing a more traditional point-source look. The frosted lens gives JellyFish a more architectural, polished appearance — especially noticeable on higher-end homes where the lighting needs to look as good during the day as it does at night.

Both systems offer 16 million colors.

The Voltage Debate: Don't Be Misled

You may have seen Trimlight claim that their 12-volt system is more efficient than JellyFish. This is misleading marketing — and here's the truth.

JellyFish runs on a 48-volt system. Inside each light node is a 12-volt chip that uses the energy — so the actual operating voltage at the light level is identical. The reason JellyFish uses 48 volts at the line level is a significant engineering advantage: it allows runs of much greater distance without requiring additional power supplies. On larger homes and commercial buildings, this means a cleaner, more reliable installation with fewer components, fewer potential failure points, and lower installation cost.

Trimlight's 12-volt system requires additional power supplies as run distances increase. That adds complexity, cost, and more equipment to maintain over time.

JellyFish also offers a 12-volt system for applications where it makes sense — giving homeowners and installers flexibility depending on the specific needs of the project. But for larger homes and commercial buildings where run distances are greater, the 48-volt system is the smarter, more scalable choice.

Spacing Options: Another Misleading Trimlight Claim

Trimlight has suggested in their marketing that JellyFish cannot accommodate different spacing options between lights. This is simply not accurate.

JellyFish offers 6-inch, 9-inch, and 16-inch spacing on their track system. Whether your home calls for a dense, dramatic look or a more subtle, spread-out effect, JellyFish has a spacing option that fits. Your installer — not a one-size-fits-all product limitation — determines the right spacing for your specific home.

When you hear a competitor claim that JellyFish "can't handle" certain configurations, ask them to show you that in writing. We'll be happy to show you the product specs that say otherwise.

Beyond Lighting: Music Box Integration and True Audio Partnership

JellyFish isn't just a lighting system — it's an outdoor experience platform.

JellyFish Music Box allows your lights to react and move in sync with music in real time. Whether it's a Fourth of July playlist, a Halloween soundtrack, or a Browns game day, your lights become part of the atmosphere — not just decoration. While Trimlight also offers a music sync feature, JellyFish's Music Box integration is purpose-built and pairs seamlessly with the True Audio outdoor sound partnership for a complete, unified experience.

And for homeowners who want to take the outdoor experience further, JellyFish has partnered with True Audio to provide high-quality outdoor sound solutions that integrate seamlessly with your lighting system. Premium outdoor speakers paired with a JellyFish system creates a complete backyard entertainment setup that no competitor in this market can match.

At CoolBreeze Technologies we install both — so you can have the full experience designed and installed by one trusted local team.

Don't Be Fooled by the "Lifetime Warranty"

Let's talk about the warranty claim you've probably seen in Trimlight marketing. We went directly to Trimlight's official website to get the facts — and what we found is eye-opening.

What "Lifetime" Actually Means

According to Trimlight's own warranty page, the warranty covers parts for the manufacturer's estimated lifespan of the product — not your lifetime. Here's what that actually looks like in practice:

  • If you only run the lights during holidays, they estimate 30-40 years

  • With typical everyday use, components last around 20-30 years

  • If you run them 12-16 hours daily, the expected lifespan drops to just 7-8 years

So the "lifetime" in their warranty is entirely dependent on how much you use the product you paid thousands of dollars for. The more you enjoy your lights, the shorter the warranty period.

Labor Is Only Covered for One Year

Here's the part Trimlight doesn't put in their marketing materials. According to their official warranty documentation:

Labor costs for manufacturer-defective parts are covered for a minimum of only one full year. After that first year, every service visit is on you.

And it gets worse. Trimlight HQ explicitly states on their own website that they are not responsible for installation, support, or repairs. Those responsibilities fall entirely on your local dealer — who operates as an independent business with no formal affiliation to Trimlight corporate.

That means if your local Trimlight dealer closes, retires, or goes out of business, your warranty support goes with them. There is no corporate safety net.

The $75 "Nothing Is Wrong" Fee

Trimlight's official warranty also states that a minimum service fee of $75 may be charged if the parts are shown to be working properly. In other words, if you call for a repair and the technician determines nothing is defective, you still get a bill just for the visit.

What's NOT Covered at All

Straight from Trimlight's own warranty page, the following are explicitly excluded:

  • The software that connects the controller to your smartphone or tablet

  • Wi-Fi or radio frequency interference issues

  • Future technology changes that affect the lifespan of control systems

  • Acts of nature, power surges, animal damage, accidental impact

And not all Trimlight products carry a lifetime warranty. Ridge Lights carry only a 1-year warranty. Landscape lights carry only a 10-year warranty.

What CoolBreeze Technologies Offers Instead

We'll be completely straight with you — because that's how we operate.

We will replace your JellyFish lights free of charge for as long as we can source parts from the manufacturer. That's the honest version of what any permanent lighting company can realistically promise.

But here's the difference: our labor is included. Always. No service call fees. No $75 "we checked and everything is fine" charges. No one-year labor cliff. Our warranty service cost is built into the original price of your installation — the day we install your system, you're covered.

And unlike a dealer-dependent warranty with no corporate backing, CoolBreeze Technologies is a family-owned business that has been serving Northern Ohio since 2001. We're not going anywhere. When you call us, you reach us — not a franchise hotline, not a dealer network, not a corporate warranty department that disclaims all responsibility on their own website.

We tell you the whole truth. Not just the part that sounds good in a sales pitch.

Local Installation and Support: This Matters More Than You Think

Here's something no comparison chart will tell you.

When your lights have an issue — an app question, a tripped controller, a holiday pattern that won't load — you need someone local who picks up the phone.

CoolBreeze Technologies is based in Lorain, Ohio. Our team lead and technical director Kaden has deep electrical and technical expertise and is on every installation. We are a family-owned business that has been serving Northern Ohio since 2001. We're not a franchise. We're not a call center. We're your neighbors.

We've heard from homeowners who chose a competitor based on a lower price or a flashy warranty claim, only to find themselves unable to get service after the sale. That's not how we operate.
